Privacy policy

What brink.watch collects, what for, where it is kept and how to have it deleted. Written so that it can be checked: every statement here matches code that is published openly.

In force since 23 August 2026 · Revision 1.1 · Operator — brink.watch · Contact — support@brink.watch

This is a translation provided for convenience. The Russian version is the authoritative one; in case of any discrepancy, the Russian text prevails.

In short

1. What is collected and what for

1.1. If you are just reading the site

The barometer is static files. No account is needed and we record nothing about you.

Your browser stores your display settings in local storage on your own device: the chosen language, the last pair you opened, the chart scale and the paper tint. These are not cookies, they are never sent anywhere and we cannot read them. They are cleared together with site data in your browser settings.

Like any site on the internet, brink.watch is visible to its host — Cloudflare — which keeps technical request logs and protects the site from attacks. That happens on Cloudflare's side under their rules.

The visit counter. We count how many people come and which pages they read — there is no other way to tell whether the service is of use to anyone. For that, Cloudflare Web Analytics is enabled: it collects anonymous statistics — page views, referrer, country, device and browser type, load speed.

How it differs from the usual counters, and why we chose it: it sets no cookies, assigns you no persistent identifier and does not follow you across other sites. No visitor profile comes into existence, and we cannot tie this data to your account.

For visitors from the European Union the counter is not served at all: the script is not loaded for them and no statistics about them are collected. This is a setting on our side, not a promise made in words.

1.2. If you have opened an account

WhatWhat forHow long it is kept
Email addressThis is your login. It also receives access-related mail and notifications, if you have switched them onAs long as the account exists
Password hashSign-in check. The password is transformed irreversibly (PBKDF2 with a salt and a secret key); the original password is stored nowhereAs long as the account exists
Address confirmation flagConfirms the address belongs to youAs long as the account exists
Consent to notificationsTo send mail only to those who asked for itAs long as the account exists
Session identifier (as a hash)So the password is not asked for on every page30 days, or until you sign out
One-time links (as hashes)Address confirmation and forgotten-password reset24 hours and 1 hour respectively
Failed sign-in counter: email address and IP addressProtection against password guessing15 minutes, then erased automatically

The IP address is used only as the key of the attempt counter and lives the same 15 minutes. We keep no log of your visits and do not link an IP to what you do in your account.

1.3. If you have taken out a subscription

Payments are handled by Paddle acting as merchant of record. Card details are entered on their side, never reach us and are not stored by us.

From Paddle we receive and keep what is needed to open access to you: email address, subscription and customer identifiers, the plan, the subscription status and the end date of the paid period. A technical record of the payment notification received is stored separately — it is needed so that one payment is not processed twice, and so that there is something to rely on if money is ever disputed.

2. Where it is kept

Account data sits in a Cloudflare D1 database in the European region. Mail is sent through Resend (European sending region); incoming mail to support@brink.watch is received by Cloudflare Email Routing and forwarded to the operator's mailbox.

This means the companies listed technically process data on our instructions. We chose them and we answer to you for that choice.

3. Cookies

The site sets one cookie, and only after you sign in: escx_session — the identifier of your session.

It is marked HttpOnly (not readable by scripts on the page), Secure (sent only over an encrypted connection) and SameSite=Lax (not sent when arriving from someone else's site). There are no advertising or analytics cookies — the visit counter works without them — and therefore no consent banner either: there is nothing to consent to.

4. Mail

Service mail — address confirmation and password reset — arrives because you asked for that action yourself. You cannot opt out of it: without it signing in is impossible.

Notifications about changes in pairs arrive only if you switched them on yourself in your account. They can be switched off in the same place, in one click, at any time and without losing the account.

5. What we do NOT do

6. Your rights

Write to support@brink.watch and we will:

We reply within a reasonable time, normally within 30 days. So that your data is not handed to a stranger, the request has to come from the address the account is registered to.

Some records we are obliged to keep even after an account is deleted: payment records are needed for accounting and tax purposes and are kept for as long as the law requires. Records of payments already made are also kept by Paddle as merchant of record.

7. Children

The service is not intended for anyone under 16 and does not knowingly collect their data. If such data has reached us, write to us and we will delete it.

8. Security

Passwords are stored only as an irreversible hash with an individual salt and an additional secret key that is not held in the database. Session identifiers and one-time links are stored as hashes too — a copy of the database does not let anyone into someone else's account. The connection to the site is always encrypted.

Absolute protection does not exist, and promising it would be dishonest. If you have found a vulnerability, write to support@brink.watch; we will look into it and thank you.

9. Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of the page and the revision number. Substantial changes affecting data already collected will be sent by mail to everyone who has an account.

10. The data the barometer itself shows

This is a separate matter, but it belongs here. The barometer is computed from open sources — GDELT, UCDP, the OFAC sanctions lists, UN General Assembly votes, the open ADS-B network — and describes events between states, not people. There is no personal data in the barometer.

The method is published openly, and every number can be unfolded down to the source event with a link to the publication.
